Summer 2022 Internship: Newark Water Coalition and Humanities Action Lab

Summer Internship: Newark Water Coalition and Humanities Action Lab

June 6-August 5, 2022

Receive a $3,000 stipend while developing skills in mutual aid organizing, community-based storytelling, and digital media production through this 9-week summer internship hosted by the Humanities Action Lab (HAL) at Rutgers-Newark and Newark Water Coalition (NWC), a local advocacy organization. Interns will work with NWC members and HAL staff to launch Newark Community Voices, a new community-based project that will produce digital news stories about public health, environmental, and climate issues in the city’s “frontline” communities (those that are impacted most directly by inequality and injustice).

Through workshop-style training sessions and on-the-ground practice with a professional videographer, veteran organizers, and humanities scholars, interns will gain tangible experience:

  • distributing vital resources to local residents through Newark Water Coalition’s mutual aid network

  • conducting public outreach and developing organizing relationships in frontline communities

  • collaborating with local residents to identify potential stories about the environmental and public health challenges, material needs, and public policy priorities of Newark’s frontline communities

  • creating short video documentaries (3-to-5 minutes) about the above issues for audiences in frontline communities and in collaboration with community members.

The internship is open to all Newark residents aged 17-26.

No experience in organizing or digital media production necessary!

Interns must commit to:

  • working 15 hours per week from June 6-August 5

  • participating in at least 5 Newark Water Coalition’s weekly distribution events (Saturdays, 11am-2pm, St. Stephen’s Church, 7 Wilson Ave., Newark)

  • attending weekly in-person team meetings at the offices of Newark Water Coalition (311 Clinton Ave, Newark) and the Humanities Action Lab (Hahne & Co. Building, 54 Halsey St., Room 422, Newark)

  • participating in group work and/or independent research outside of weekly team meeting times
