Building Bridges, Creating Futures: Community-led Dialogue and Action

Join us in Building Bridges through community collaborations in East Harlem.

This initiative brings together East Harlem and Hunter College leaders, organizers, scholars, and students to strengthen partnerships and shape what collaboration for justice can look like in this moment.

“Building Bridges” launched with a gathering on April 30, 2025, that sought to create a space for deep listening, storytelling, and community-driven strategy.  The initiative was developed by a group of Hunter faculty and East Harlem community leaders convened by Dr. Mayra Lopez-Humphreys of the Silberman School of Social Work, with support from Humanities Action Lab staff.

Humanities Action Lab partners from Chicago, North Carolina, and Milwaukee joined Hunter College faculty and justice-impacted leaders in East Harlem at Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work to create pathways for justice and transformation in East Harlem, and beyond.

Goals were to:

  • Center community voice as a driver of transformation
  • Heal through collective care and joy
  • Bridge silos across systems and sectors
  • Sustain partnerships with equity and accountability
  • Use creativity for justice through culture and storytelling

Stay tuned for a fall gathering to continue planning!
