During the 1950s and 1960s, the University of Minnesota embarked on an expansion project of its Twin Cities campus into the adjacent working class Cedar Riverside neighborhood, acquiring land through eminent domain and displacing and dispossessing many residents and property owners. Since fall 2021, a team of students, faculty, and community partners have been researching this history and more recent histories of the University of Minnesota’s relationship with the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood and other urban neighborhoods surrounding campus. Through new graduate and undergraduate courses dedicated to the project, students have unearthed new archival material, conducted interviews, and created pop-up exhibitions, multimedia neighborhood history events, and digital maps demonstrating patterns of displacement
