Rikers Public Memory Project: History, Repair, and Public Memory at the New York Public Library

Rikers Public Memory Project

New York, New York

Join us on Wednesday, April 29th for a special public panel event to honor the inclusion of @rikers.public.memory.project oral histories into the New York Public Library collection.

This archive—consisting of ninety interviews conducted between 2018 and 2021—preserves and highlights the stories of those most impacted by Rikers Island, including formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. A panel bringing together voices behind the project discusses how these histories confront generational harms and challenge dehumanizing narratives—while also exploring how public memory can advance reparative justice.

The panel will be moderated by Shana Russell, Ph.D., RPMP’s resident historian. Shana will lead a conversation with narrators Turquoise Martin and Edwin Santana and longtime collaborator Tamara Santibanez.

Join the event in-person at the main NYPL building or tune in online.
